New Book released on the Rally

‘A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY’ by SIMON PARK

(Trafford Publishing, ISBN: 978-1-4251-8508-4, price £9.99 gbp)

The story of car no. 19, ‘the Post Office Mini’ (aka ‘The Buzby Special’), which finished an honourable last on this, the longest car rally in history.

Simon was born and brought up in the English Midlands, and is a composer specialising in film and TV music. In 1973, his recording of ‘Eye Level’, the theme from the Thames TV series ‘Van Der Valk’, topped the UK pop charts and sold more than a million copies. It was as a result of this that he first met journalist and broadcaster Mike Dickin, and they quickly became close friends. Their shared love of cars and racing was never better expressed than by their madcap, low-budget entry into the world’s longest car rally.

An audio cassette diary recorded ‘on the road’(while we were in the Rally), copious notes made immediately after the event and piles of assorted paperwork gave Simon ample material for a book; but John Stathatos got there first and eighteen years elapsed before Simon finally decided to get it written – and a further thirteen years before it got published. The book was finally published and released at the end of March 2009.

Despite the epic a wry, self-deprecating humour. In the author’s own words, it is ‘an endless inventory of cock-ups’. It is scale of the journey and the often scary events it recalls, the book doesn’t take itself too seriously, and is written with also, sadly, in memoriam Mike Dickin, who died in a road accident in 2006.
